VIDEO: Compiling The Most Wanted List

CLAY COUNTY, Miss.(WCBI)- Rounding up potential bad guys can be an around the clock job.

It would take all hands on deck, for law enforcement, to catch every person who committed a crime but Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott says that’s where his Most Wanted List comes in.

“Most wanted, that’s reserved and is always going to be felony charges. Priorities are crimes of violence, such as rape, aggravated or domestic assault. These are the ones we want to get out to the public as quick as we can. We feel like they pose the most threat to the public,”said  Scott.

Clay County’s most wanted list began 2 years ago and has been a great resource in keeping the public safe.

“On our website, it actually has alerts when we put somebody on the most wanted. You can sign up and it will actually sent alerts in an email or in a text message. This website shows who’s currently in jail, shows who’s been booked in, and booked out,”said Scott.

Davine Beck is the Assistant Police Chief for Macon. He says, in his area, a felony isn’t the only thing that could land you a spot on the list.

“Misdemeanor crimes, we have high dollar signs, we have a top 10 on those, those people who owe three thousand or more. We definitely want to try and get those people off the streets. We try and collect some of the money,” said Beck.

Beck says they have 30 people total on their Most Wanted List. He says having a list, the community knows about, is a great tool for getting the offender off the streets.

“We try to use the general public to try and get some of the information on where this guy is. Because you don’t want a person who’s burglarized a home on the street. They will continue to do it.They won’t stop same with murderers and rapist you don’t want those people on the street,”said Beck.

To find people who may have left the state there’s the National Crime Information Center.

It makes the fugitive’s information available to law enforcement agencies all over the country.
