Video: Custer Dairy Plant Renovations
STARKVILLE,Miss.(WCBI)—Well it’s a Mississippi Sate “must try.” The Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, or the MSU Cheese Store, has been making a name for it’s self for more than 75 years with it’s world famous cheese.
” We have been able to produce more cheese and we actually still have Edam and Cheddar Cheese on Hand,” said Plant Manager Eric Goan.
The demand has always been high for MSU Cheese. MAFES Sales Store Manager Troy Weaver says they usually aren’t equip to keep up with the high demand… but this years a little different.
“This year has been an exceptional year with the dairy plant being in full production. And having cheese in December is very unheard of around these parts. Anybody’s that’s ever been in the store or has ordered before they are really surprised we still have cheese this time of year,”said Weaver.
The Custer Dairy Processing Plant produces thousands of blocks, wheels and balls of cheese each year. Plant General Manager Eric Goan says in order to keep up they had to do some fixing up.
” We’ve replaced our flooring in our processing plant, we are currently renovating our boiler system and updating it. And we have also put in some new equipment over the past couple years. This has helped us improve the production flow in the plant,”said Goan.
” It’s more efficient very much more efficient our through puts increase so we are not having to start up and quit as many times but also with that efficiency we can get more through a day so our processing day can be shorter. It cuts back our labor but also cuts back on the time and energy it takes to process our equipment,” said Goan.
Weaver has been sales store manager for a little over 3 years. He says he hopes the renovations will boost their ability of producing quality products for years to come.
” We do intend on increasing business hopefully with the renovations we’ve already had. Hopefully that will allow us to produce more and to service more people. So we look forward to a great 2017,”said Weaver.
Custer Dairy Plant emphases that cleanliness and safety during renovations are their main concern.
The plant is currently closed to complete boiler room maintenance. The plant will resume production January 3rd.
