VIDEO: Dickie Scruggs Speaks At Columbus Rotary
COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – He served federal prison time for bribery, now former attorney, Dickie Scruggs is working to make a difference across the state.
Scruggs spoke to the Columbus Rotary Club on Tuesday about about being disbarred, his time in prison teaching GED to inmates, and learning about the adult education system once out of jail.
He says his experiences led him to start a non-profit foundation called “2nd Chance Mississippi.”
It’s a mission to raise awareness and money for adult basic education and skill training in Mississippi.
“We give only so many tax breaks and tax incentives for businesses to locate here. If the people they would employ are not educated and not trained, they won’t come here. Every other state in the south is also offering great tax incentives, and if we want to get up on that, we’ve got to educate, re-educate a lot of people.” says Scruggs.
Scurggs says a skilled and educated work force is the solution to Mississippi’s education and economic problems.
