Video: HailState Hoops “Not Satisfied” with Finishing Second Last Season

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI/MSU Athletics) – Sophomore Ameshya Williams tallied 35 points and 12 rebounds as the Mississippi State women’s basketball team gave fans their first look at the 2017-18 squad during Wednesday night’s Maroon-White Scrimmage at Humphrey Coliseum.

Williams, a Gulfport, Miss., native, shot 57.7 percent from the field, hitting 15 of her 26 shots. She also knocked down five free throws and added a pair of blocks and three steals over five 10-minute quarters.

Senior Roshunda Johnson added 24 points as she drained 8 of her 14 field goal attempts (57.1 percent), including hitting 3 of 5 from 3-point range.

Junior Teaira McCowan, the 2017 SEC Sixth Woman of the Year, joined Williams with a double-double as she scored 22 points and added 15 rebounds. McCowan also blocked a pair of shots in Wednesday’s action.

The first two quarters saw the Bulldogs battle in a Maroon-White format, with the Maroon squad taking a 49-46 decision.

Maroon led 26-21 after the opening quarter of play behind eight points each from Williams and Blair Schaefer.

Johnson paced the White contingent with seven points on 3 of 5 shooting, while Jordan Danberry added five opening-quarter points.

White rallied in the second quarter to post a 25-23 edge thanks to 11 points and seven boards from McCowan. Johnson added six points in the quarter.

Maroon held on to the win thanks to 11 second-quarter points from Williams and five each from Schaefer and Morgan William.

The two squads came together for the final three quarters to face off against the men’s practice players.

Williams led State in the third quarter with eight points, while Victoria Vivians guided the way in the fourth with seven.

Vivians added 15 points, while Schaefer notched 13 and freshman Chloe Bibby 11.

Mississippi State returns to the Humphrey Coliseum floor Nov. 3, hosting Arkansas-Fort Smith in a 6 p.m. exhibition that will be streamed live on SEC Network +. Admission to that contest is free.

The Bulldogs open the regular season Nov. 10, hosting Virginia at 8 p.m. That contest follows the men’s team’s 5:30 p.m. opener against Alabama State. One $20 ticket gets admission to both contests, and a special Final Four banner-raising ceremony will be held prior to the second game of the twin bill.
