VIDEO: Hurricane Harvey Relief Efforts

WEBSTER COUNTY, Miss.(WCBI)— It’s been nearly 2 weeks since Hurricane Harvey made landfall, devastating everything in it’s path and racking up billions of dollars in damages.

” First of all, they’re in need of all these supplies. Also, maybe, they can see Christ through our actions. It’s all taking care of our fellow christian and people,”said Volunteer Scott Dean.

Helping anyone in need, was the message, Saturday morning, as residents from Webster County gathered supplies to help victims of Hurricane Harvey.

” We have our youth from our church and several volunteers. People came yesterday, a lot of these came yesterday to help us out. We’ve had plenty of help we just needed donations,”said  Event Organizer Jason Burney.

Burney attends Tomnolen Baptist Church and is leading the donation efforts.  Burney owns his own trucking company. He says he feels it’s his obligation to help those in need.

” We all need help at some point in our lives. There’s been so much in the media and the whole nation; racism, hate groups, such things. When disasters hit, it seems like everybody has to come together,”said Burney.

The supplies are going to a church in Beaumont Texas. Burney says he is thankful for any donation but he couldn’t have done it without a little assistance himself.

“Plymoth Tube Company, they allowed us to use this facility to take all these donations and back our truck in and take this in.  Schools, Winona Christian School, they had a drive and we went over there and pick there donations up yesterday,”said Burney.

Dean is the youth director at Tomnolen Baptist, He says he’s happy to be able to make a difference.

“If they’ve got the time and they’ve got the money, I think, everyone should participate in this you never know when we might need the help next,”said Dean.

Food, water, and clothes are being donated. Burney says they are thankful for what ever they get but as time passes the victims needs change.

” This is all new to us. We are figuring it out as we go. We’ve taken in so many clothing donations but what there are telling me, now, with this being a week, 2 weeks since the storm hit, there’re needing cleaning supplies. In the beginning, yes, they need clothes but in future donation the cleaning supplies is one of the main things and medical supplies,”said Burney.

Plans are already underway to send a truck to Florida to assist Hurricane Irma victims.
