VIDEO: The Latest On The Starkville Apartment Fire

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – The cause of the fire at the Avalon Apartments is being ruled an undetermined accident.

Starkville Fire Chief Charles Yarbrough tells WCBI the fire in building O remains under investigation.

Investigators believe the blaze started on the second or third floor, but can’t be sure until they get a better look at the damage.

The top two floors have fallen onto the first floor, making the building unstable, and dangerous for investigators to enter.

“Witnesses are the most important thing. Especially, in a fire like this because we really can’t get in there and do investigations, so we’re basing everything on witness statements. We can take the witness statements and we can put them together and we can determine pretty much where it started at, how it may have started, but the witness statements are the most important thing in this area right now,” says Yarbrough.

Yarbrough says his department is going over twenty witness statements to figure out what happened.

He also says arson has been ruled out.
