Video: Military Spouses Appreciated at CAFB

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — May 6th is national Military Spouses Appreciation Day.

It’s a time set aside to recognize the sacrifices spouses make as well.

Being a military spouse is not easy, just ask Bobbi Curry. Her family moved to Columbus 9 months ago and will soon be packing up again.

“Kids are the real like warriors through it all because, our son will be his 3rd high school. Our girls are younger so they haven’t been as impacted by it all but just trying to get them through life and all and struggles and things they have to sacrifice as well,” says Curry.

She says they make each move work through support.

“Bonding together as a family and making those choices together,” says Curry.

William O’Meara made the choice to no longer be active duty. Now his wife is. It’s a choice that has led to some sacrifices.

“Getting reassigned every couple of years for her forces me to find a new job every couple of years. I did have to take a down grade to come here to Columbus. But you know? It’s okay because we’re together and life is good,” says O’Meara.

He says making it work is about a routine.

“We have a protocol. My job is to get the kids from school and to get them home and dinner and homework. I like being that support for her,” he says.

Allison Strouse works 3 jobs and goes to school while she supports her Air Force husband.

“We just kind of bounce off each other. He goes in during the day and sometimes at night. When he’s working I do my thing and when he’s not working I study. We just go back and forth,” she says.

To make it easier on their 3 kids, they prepare for anything.

“There’s no 2 days that are the same just trying to keep up with the changing of what tomorrow brings,” says Strouse.

Marla Fisher says you know the commitment you are taking on when you marry a service member.

“The rewards just keep you going. You know new adventures on the horizon. New Friends. I have friends all over the world,” she says.

She enjoys stepping up when her husband is away and says it’s all about perspective, because they don’t know another way.

” I’ve learned a lot about boy scouts and cub scouts since I’ve had boys when Dad was not around. So that’s fun,” says Fisher.

All these families say they are like any other, they just want to do what’s best for their spouses and kids.
