MISSISSIPPI STATE, Miss. (WCBI) – Social studies and history teachers from across the state gather in Starkville for an annual conference.

The “Mississippi Council for the Social Studies” held its meeting today on the MSU campus.

The “MCSS” promotes social studies as the key subject in developing good citizenship and provides professional development for social studies teachers.

The theme for this year’s conference was “Mississippi Moments: 200 Years of Social Studies Content and More.”

“This conference is important because it brings teachers together to learn about cutting edge teaching and learning strategies, to learn about the latest in social studies practice, how best to work with kids in classrooms, how best to help them achieve the learning standards and to prepare for college, career, and civic life,” says Larry Paska of the National Council of Social Studies.

West Point High School teacher Bruce Mize was inducted into the group’s hall of fame during today’s luncheon.
