LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A February moonshine bust in Monroe County led to the seizure of more than a dozen pit bulls.

The dogs were living in dilapidated conditions. Many were starving, chained to trees and fighting.

The dogs were temporarily sheltered at the Monroe County Jail but a local Lowndes County non-profit, was asked to step in and help.

Since Friday, Shaw Pit Bull Rescue has been helping rehab some of those dogs who might not have lived much longer.

” We were just going to get a few of them but then we had a lot of people step up and want to donate so we were able to take more than we went originally for,” said Shaw co-founder, Kenneth Shaw.

The dogs previously looked like this un-healthy and mistreated but in just five days, since the dogs were turned over to the rescue, Shaw says he has seen a big change.

“The wounds are closing up on them and just the whole demeanor of the dogs. They look happy almost and they are just glad to get a good meal and a lot of attention. And you could tell when you looked at some of them their tails wagging, their just real excited about people having something to do with them,” said Shaw.

Shaw says the first thing they do with the dogs is get them healthy and trained.

“That’s the whole part of rehabilitating an animal is getting them back into the groove because they are pack animals and they’ve been kept separate and that’s against what they actually are and they have to learn all that all over again,” said Shaw.

After the dogs are healthy, the goal is to find their forever homes.

There isn’t a timeline for when the dogs will be ready for adoption but Shaw hopes they will be given a chance.

“Some turn around real quick and we’ve got some here that they probably will never get a home,” added Shaw.

Shaw Pit Bull Rescue is a non-profit. They survive off donations.
