Video: MSU students take part in designing new school
STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)- Students in Mississippi State University’s College of Architecture, Art and Design had some real world experience on a big project. It’s part of the university’s Brasfield and Gorrie Design competition. Wednesday 9 groups presented plans for the new Armstrong Middle School, that’s set to open in 2019.
Majors within the CAAD department teamed up to design the new school. Everything from inside the building to the outside structure. A panel of judges critiqued each group.
Students had two weeks to complete the entire project, but say it prepared them for what’s to come
“You really get the feel of a real life project and that’s the first time we’ve done that and that was so valuable,” said Interior Design major Hannah Monroe.
“In the real world we’re going to be working with these people everyday. We’re never going to be working just with our major. So, it really taught a lot on how to collaborate with and come up with how it will be in the real world,” said Interior Design major Cody Moore.
Students say the intense project prompted a lot of sleepless nights, but showed them they’re dreams are becoming a reality.
“It definitely solidifies it,” said Natalie Watson.
“Nothing can keep me up until 5 a.m., sleep one hour and go after it again,” said Leah Welborn.
First place was the group who designed “Illuminating Innovative Ideas.” These ideas will go into the actual building of Armstrong Middle School.
