COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – In part one of WCBI’s Alyssa Martin’s series on Mississippi University For Women returning athletics, she looked at what sports they will have, if they will join a conference and how the program will be funded

In part two, she takes a look at how the college plans to recruit student athletes, the benefits of sports and much more.

“I am now convinced there are great student athletes out there who want to play up one level from where they are. Weather it’s high school or community college and they’ll be a great addition to this university,” said MUW President Dr. Jim Borsig.
MUW will compete against other division three colleges but students who go to a D3 school, don’t receive an athletic scholarship.

Borsig says coaches will work closely with the school’s admissions department to help find athletes.

“One way to think of coaches, they are going to be recruiters working in coordination with the department of admissions and our admissions counselors who are out working everyday are going to have information about athletics and it just is another line of conversation,” said Borsig.

Borsig says MUW is in a popular athletic area of the state, which will help fill team rosters.

“We had a distinguished athletic history here. We were very competitive at the division two level for a long time, college athletics has changed a lot in the last 10 years. And so we really are looking at who we are, where we are located geographically, the facilities we have, the interest in the area. We talk to high school athletic directors and community college athletic directors. This is a great athletic part of the state, there is a lot of good high school and community college competition, so we’re going to build off the strengths we have here,” said Borsig.

For several years, a name change for The W has been in question.

Borsig says that isn’t a top priority right now.

“I’ve said since I got here that name change is not off the table, but it’s not at the front of the list. I think that has been pretty consistent in the conversations. I don’t think this by itself will cause that to take place necessarily. We’ve done a lot of marketing research, our students identify with going to school at the w, that’s gender neutral to them, we could change the name to Harvard and we would still be know as The W,” said Borsig.

When an athletic director is hired, the time table for when teams take the field will be determined.

But Biorsig says he hopes it will be in the near future.

“Soon, as soon as possible. As soon as we can be credible and get everything in place,” added Borsig.
There are roughly more than 2,000 students enrolled at The W.

Soon, the requirements and job description of the athletic director will be posted on MUW’s website, www.muw.edu
