Video: Raising Awareness; Standing Up Against Domestic Violence
COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- Columbus and other Lowndes County residents gathered together Monday night to remember victims and survivors of domestic violence.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
A candle light vigil and balloon release was held outside the Columbus Municipal Complex to help bring awareness, and to help show support to those affected by domestic violence and abuse.
Organizers want to make sure that people know they are not alone and have someplace to turn for help.
“We want to make the victims aware that there is somewhere they can go and someone they can talk to, even though they may not want to press charges and may not want to let their abuser know what’s going on, but they have someone they can talk to and know it’s confidential,” said Dorothy Givens with the city of Columbus.
Monday’s event was the 4th year the vigil was put on.
