Video: Starkville Academy Wins MAIS AAA State Championship In OT Thriller

JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) — The 2017 MAIS AAA state championship brought out the best of high school football.

In a rematch of an early season contest, Starkville Academy defeats Indianola Academy 21-14 in overtime to take home the program’s seventh state championship, and first since 2005.

Trailing 14-7 with just under nine minutes to go in the fourth, Noah Methvin scored a four yard rushing touchdown to tie the game. In overtime, Taylor Arnold threw a touchdown to Kyle Faver to give Starkville Academy a 21-14 lead.

The last chance for defending champion Indianola Academy came on a fourth and goal, with the Volunteers holding on a rush attempt to clinch the win.

After losing to the Colonels in week three, Starkville Academy reeled off eleven straight wins, including the championship title game. The 14-points scored by the Colonels are the only points the Volunteers gave up in the 2017 MAIS AAA playoffs.
