VIDEO: Vehicle Crashes Into Confederate Statue

OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI) – Yesterday evening in Oxford, a pickup truck crashed into a confederate statue on Ole Miss’s campus.

The cause of the crash is being reported as driver under the influence, but an investigation is being conducted to gather more details behind the accident.

Both the driver and the passenger from the accident were treated at Baptist for their injuries.

Campus PD is investigating this as an accident, but they are preparing to find anything.

Down Rebel Drive before the circle, stands the century old statue recognizing those from Oxford who fought in the civil war.

Yesterday evening, it became the site of a vehicle accident, completely displacing the stone plaque on the front.

“I saw the monument. There was like pictures of the accident of Twitter last night, and I kind of just wanted to come and see for myself how it looked because I saw the truck that ran into it. It looked like it was just completely mangled, just totaled,” said Ole Miss student, Adam Sullivan.

Campus Police are investigating this crash as driving under the influence.

For students, cars crashing into structures is becoming a familiar site.

“Just recently, someone ran right through Toyo, so having the confederate statue hit doesn’t seem like much of a shock to any of us. It’s just another bad driving experience in Oxford,” said Ole Miss student, Ian Doty.

Campus Police’s Twitter confirms their investigation, but cannot indicate if the crash was deliberate.

Students aren’t quite sure either and wait for answers.

“Someone might have been targeting it; I highly doubt it,” said Doty.

“Without knowing the details of what actually happened, I don’t really have many thoughts on it,” said Sullivan.

Campus Police with prosecutors, as well as the DA, and the FBI to see if additional charges will have to be made, depending on where the investigation goes.
