Water Valley Businesses Are Ready For Next Wave of Heavy Rain

WATER VALLEY, Miss. (WCBI) – The low-lying county of Yalobusha was caught by surprise by last week’s rain, but this week businesses are a little more prepared for flash flooding.

Businesses at the bottom of Main Street are ready for the end of the week rains.

Water Valley had a scare with last week’s flash flooding.

“It was coming towards a couple of businesses on South Main. We were scared that he would come this way, but thank God it never did,” said Turnage Drug Store Manager, Monica Turnage.

At the bottom of Main Street it was a different story.

The Crawford Sports Complex was looking more like a lake than a field, and across the street Super Lube and Tire fought against rising waters.

“The water had gotten above my floorboard there, and we didn’t know what to do,” said Secretary, Sandra Williams.

But with quick coordination, hardly a drop entered the building.

“So everybody in town, fire department, police, the first emergency,” started Turnage.

“…the county supervisors, other merchants just came by and helped us and they filled the bags out and prevented the water from going into the store,” continued Williams.

Now with an idea of how to prepare, Water Valley is ready for the next wave of heavy rain.

“Everybody in town, everybody decided to help. The city is doing a pretty good job about keeping the streets clean and the first responders and everybody just came and helped,” said Turnage.
