WIC will still be able to provide assistance, despite government shutdown

MISSISSIPPI (WCBI) – If the government shutdown continues, the Mississippi State Department of Health will still be able to provide assistance.

The agency’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, or WIC, will remain open through the month of January if the shutdown continues.

The United States Department of Agriculture funds WIC.

Mississippi State Department of Health officials say there are enough funds in the fiscal year 2019 to continue providing the services.

WIC serves about 95,000 clients each month.

Health leaders are also preparing for further delays in funding if the shutdown goes beyond January.
