COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The Chateaux Holly Hills apartment complex was flooded after heavy rain moved through north Columbus on Tuesday afternoon.

Powerful currents of water pushed their way through the complex, leaving many people stranded.

A drainage ditch was overwhelmed with several inches of rain in a short period of time, even pushing garbage dumpsters away from their original spot.

The dumpsters had to be moved to allow the water to flow out.

Lowndes County E.M.A. and city and county crews spent the evening trying to get people out, if they wanted to leave. Columbus firefighters say four to six inches of water was inside the apartments.

15 people stayed at the temporary shelter set up by the American Red Cross at Southside Baptist Church on Tuesday night.

Electricity cut off to a portion of the complex because of the flooding.

” Emergency services has been overwhelmed with calls all day because flash flood has been mostly in the North Columbus from Hospital Drive, all the way to Bluecutt Road,” said Lowndes County Emergency Management Agency Director Cindy Lawrence.

“The reason we decided was because we had to Zion with us and we want to make sure he was OK. They turned off the electricity on the inside. So, we wanted to make sure he was in a safe environment,” said Chateaux Holly Hills resident Eddie Patton.

No one was injured.

Power will be restored after a damage assessment is done Wednesday.
