OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI) – The University of Mississippi is one step closer to having a new chancellor. On Monday the Board of Trustees of the Institutions of Higher Learning named Jeffrey Vitter as the preferred candidate to replace Doctor Dan Jones, whose contract was not renewed.

The New Orleans native has over 30 years experience as a teacher, researcher, and administrator. He currently serves as Provost and Executive Vice-Chancellor at the University of Kansas, where he has developed the school’s strategic plan.

State Leaders are optimistic Vitter will bring the same vision to Ole Miss.

“I think that he has a level of academic experience and just recognition that will help this university get there.”

Vitter will be in Oxford October 29th to meet with campus constituency groups.
