Video: House Passes Bill Increasing ID Requirements for Medicaid

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The Mississippi House has passed a bill that would increase the amount of personal income and identify details Medicaid recipients must report before getting the health coverage.

Legislators voted 76-40 to pass the bill without reading or discussing it.

House Bill 1116 would require state officials to build a computerized system to keep records of Medicaid recipients. Officials would hire a third-party company to develop the system. Medicaid recipients would have to prove their identity matches the computer records every three months.

The measure is meant to stop insurance fraud and abuse of the Medicaid system. Recipients charged with identity fraud could face fines and criminal prosecution and could lose their Medicaid enrollment.

The bill, approved Friday, moves to the Senate for debate.
