Student Athlete of the Week: Haley Mcmurphey, Caledonia HS, Volleyball

[syndicaster id=’6031440′] CALEDONIA, Miss. (WCBI) Haley Mcmurphey is in the top five percent of her class and is in involved in numerous school groups at Caledonia High School. Her team has also had to travel on the road every game this season. WCBI’s Jonathan Flippo has more with this week’s Student Athlete of the Week.

Haley Mcmurphey is a two sport athlete at Caledonia High School. She has played volleyball and basketball the last two seasons for the Lady Confederates. She plays middle hitter on the volleyball team and forward on the basketball team. Last season she was the M-V-P on the volleyball team.

While Mcmurphey is successful on the court, she is also successful in the classroom with her academics carrying a 3.96 overall G-P-A. Her Volleyball Coach and Senior Teammate see the leadership she brings to the team and in the classroom.

“Very studious. Always paying attention, got good grades, always doing her homework and that just goes to show not only she great at volleyball, but she really takes it seriously. If she does get a scholarship she’s going to put athletics second to school work in college,” said teammate Cassie Obman.

“Just like volleyball, in class she gives a hundred an ten percent. She’s top five percent of her class and I couldn’t ask for a better player, a more coach-able player,” said Volleyball Coach Samantha Brooks.

After graduation Mcmurphey hopes to play volleyball at the next level and wants to major in Elementary Education and her two classes she is enjoying the most right now are English and Math, but when it comes down to it she has always had a thing for Reading.

“I’ve always liked reading in general. I’ve always been a reader except now I’m so busy that’s kind of hard to get around to it and just like trying to kind of figure out like what I need to do to get the right answers for like questions or essays and it really helps with grammar and verbiage usage,” said Student Athlete Haley Mcmurphey.

“Caledonia’s gym has been under reconstruction all season and the team has had to travel on the road every game and they say it’s been hard not having that home support there to cheer them on, but they have pushed through it and made it either way,” said WCBI’s Sports Reporter Jonathan Flippo.

“It’s been pretty difficult not being able to play at home. It’s been difficult traveling and using a lot of our money that we could be putting into other things, but I think we’ve kind of pushed through it,” Mcmurphey said.

“It was tough on the girls with trying to keep their grades up and just being gone all the time not having that home support, not having their fellow athletes and students to cheer them on and so it was tough, but we’ve made it,” Brooks said.

The gym is expected to be completed in time for the first home game in basketball on November 12th against Columbus Christian Academy.
