IRS Phone Scam Circulating In Lowndes County

LOWNDES CO., Miss. (WCBI) – A phone scam is once again making the rounds in Lowndes County.

A person who received the call tells WCBI that a foreign-sounding man called her this morning, telling her she was deeply in debt to the IRS.

She was told that she needed to make a payment immediately, or that the Sheriff’s Department would show up at her doorstep to repossess her car and her home.

The scammer told her to go to Kroger and make a payment via Western Union.

The Columbus resident said she was scared it was true, and she went into a panic.

That’s when she called other people, who informed her this was a scam.

The Columbus Police Department would like to remind residents that the IRS will always contact you by mail.

They also say that the IRS requires heavy documentation that describes what you’re paying, why you’re paying it, and how you can appeal it.

The IRS will never ask anyone to send money through Kroger or Walmart.
