Alabama Special Session Resumes With Few Answers

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – The Alabama Legislature is resuming a special session on a budget shortfall the same way it began three weeks ago: With absolutely no consensus on what to do.

Gov. Robert Bentley is asking lawmakers to approve $302 million in taxes to avoid deep cuts in government services. The governor’s proposals include a cigarette tax.

But the Republican leader of the Alabama Senate on Monday said there’s little support among senators for raising taxes.

Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh suggests lawmakers could solve the problem by shifting up to $225 million in use tax dollars from the separate education budget. Marsh says lawmakers could later discuss a way to replace some of the education funds.

The state operating budget is facing a shortfall of at least $200 million.
