Amory Teen Killed in Car Crash

ITAWAMBA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — A Nettleton teenager is fighting for his life, after a wreck in Itawamba County that killed another teen.

18-year-old Dwight Phillips was driving with passenger 17-year-old Alexis Haywood, of Amory, on New Chapel Road, when the car allegedly veered off the road, and hit a tree.

The call came in just before 6:30 p.m.

Itawamba County Sheriff Chris Dickinson confirmed Haywood died at the scene.

Phillips is currently in critical condition at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.

Sheriff Dickinson says Phillips suffered a head injury and a broken pelvis.

Haywood’s funeral will take place Friday at Meadowood Baptist Church in Amory.

A time hasn’t been set yet.

Counselors and pastors are also on hand at Amory High School to talk with students.
