CHOCTAW COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)- It has been almost 50 years since Dr. Martin Luther King was tragically shot and killed.

However, almost 50 years later his legacy still lives on.

On Saturday the Choctaw County NAACP hosted its first ever MLK Extravaganza.

All churches in the county came together to honor and pay their respects to Dr. King.

“He represents the role model of motivation, justice, equality, and love,” chairman of Choctaw County NAACP, Dr. Nola Bryant said.

The program featured songs, poems, and even a reciting of one of Dr. King’s speeches.

Reverend Kamal Karriem pastors a church in Choctaw County.

He said he tries to honor Dr. King in his every day life.

“His main legacy to me is service and leadership,” Karriem said.

But Karriem said at times, it seems as if Dr. King’s legacy has been forgotten.”

“One of the components of his legacy that’s been forgotten is non violence,” Karriem said.  “We’ve become very violent in our time, not just locally in Mississippi but all across the nation.”

Karriem said if people would keep Dr. Kings words in their minds and hearts, then the world would be a much better place.

“I think we need to pay attention to his message of love, unity, self love, and love of God,” he said.

The theme for the extravaganza was ‘Keeping The Dream Alive.’

It also featured youth who were eager to participate to help carry on Dr. King’s legacy.

“We want them to understand the struggle goes on but you have the opportunity now to hope, dream dreams, and see the reality of your dreams,” Bryant said.

Next year the community is hoping to take things even farther and have a MLK Christmas Parade.
