COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Tony Carleton officially is police chief in Columbus.

With his wife and children, parents and other relatives looking on, Carleton took the chief’s oath from Columbus Mayor Robert Smith at tonight’s council meeting.

Carelton was named chief last week after six weeks as interim chief following Selvain McQueen’s retirement in mid-April. He joined the force as assistant chief last November after stepping down as Tupelo’s top cop last summer in an agreement with new Tupelo mayor Jason Shelton.
