Video: Community Meeting Focuses On Criminal Justice System

Columbus, Miss. (WCBI) — The state organization One Voice and District 41 State Representative Kabir Karriem hosted a community meeting Thursday night to talk the state of the criminal justice system, as well as neighborhood crime, racial profiling, and drug addiction.

The meeting also discussed expunging criminal records, and the processes residents must take to make the change. Both Karriem and District Attorney Scott Colom ran on criminal justice reform, and spoke on their commitment to those changes. Colom also spoke of his plan for rehabilitation for drug addicts and those convicted of non-violent crimes.

The meeting was open to the public and the panel of state and local leaders gave residents the chance to ask question, make comments, and also share their own personal stories.

Colom and volunteer attorneys also spent time with residents to discuss their options with expunging their records.

Organizers also hoped a Mississippi Bureau of Investigation representative would provide an update on the officer-involved shooting that led to the death of Ricky Ball, but Karriem told the crowd the investigator had to leave because of an emergency.
