LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. – (WCBI) A Lowndes County man’s body has been recovered from a catfish pond.

Coroner Greg Merchant says 74-year old Johnson Swoope, of Crawford, hasn’t been seen or heard from since Sunday. A farmer noticed something odd at the pond off of Gilmer Wilburn Road around 12:30 Wednesday afternoon.

He called deputies, and the Columbus Fire Departments Dive Team was dispatched. They also recovered Swoope’s silver Ford Ranger. Merchant says they are trying to piece together of timeline.

“At this point, we are trying to put together what happened between Sunday evening late to 1 p.m. Today. It is very early in the investigation. The sheriff’s department has some leads to follow up on, so everything is kind of in limbo,” says Merchant

It hasn’t been determined if foul play is involved. The initial autopsy will be performed Thursday morning.
