Fatal Monroe County Fire

HAMILTON, Miss. (WCBI) – A Monroe County woman was killed in a late Wednesday night fire.

The fire started about 10:30 P.M. at a home on Stovall Crossing Road, just north of Hamilton.

Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley said the 51-year-old white female, who died at the scene, was inside at the time of the fire.

Two neighbors saw the flames and went inside to try to rescue her. They took the woman from the living to the kitchen before being overcome with smoke.

Three volunteer fire departments responded to the scene.

The woman’s name isn’t being released until family members are notified.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Gurley says an autopsy will be done in Jackson.
