OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI) – Former Columbus Police Chief Tony Carleton is now working for the Oxford Police Department.

Chief Joey East says Carleton is working in the department’s training division.

Carleton will help with OPD’s policies, procedures, and accreditation.

East says Carleton will be a major asset to the department.

Carleton resigned from his Columbus position earlier this month after the shooting death of Ricky Ball by a Columbus officer.

At the time, Columbus Mayor Robert Smith told reporters that Carleton was taking a teaching job in Alabama.

Smith also told the media he did not know if Carleton’s decision was related to the deadly shooting.

East says Carleton is an officer and does not have a rank in the department.
