COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Former Columbus police officer Canyon Boykin drops the civil service appeal of his firing and will move forward with a federal lawsuit.

Boykin’s attorney, Jim Waide, says his client has the highest confidence in a trial by a federal jury.

City attorney Jeff Turnage released a statement, saying quote…”We are confident that ending officer Boykin’s employment was the proper and well supported decision.”

Boykin recently filed the lawsuit.

He was fired days after shooting and killing Ricky Ball while on the job.

Boykin was one of three officers that attempted to pull a vehicle over that Ball was riding in last Fall.

Ball ran and Boykin gave chase.

Boykin says after he tased Ball he saw a gun, then Ball got up and ran away and turned toward the former officer.

That’s when Boykin fired his gun.

Boykin initially submitted his resignation but instead the city council decided to fire him.
