Friar Named TPSD’s Teacher of the Year

TPSD Teacher of YearTUPELO, Miss. (Press Release) — The Tupelo School District today named longtime educator April Friar Teacher of the Year.

Friar began her career with TPSD in 2003 where she taught English I Pre-Advanced Placement. Through the years, she has taught English III American Literature and Advanced Placement English Language and Composition, Creative Writing and African American Literature at Tupelo High School. Presently, Miss Friar teaches English IV British Literature and Advanced Placement English Literature and dual-enrollment classes to THS seniors.

In her classroom, she supports each child’s growth by meeting their diverse needs in an environment that respects and values diversity. Friar takes great pride in the importance of preparing her students for college level courses and her expectations are legendary at THS.

Miss Friar serves as English Department Chair and facilitates bi-monthly professional development sessions. She trains future teachers by serving as a clinical instructor for the past six years to student-teachers from various universities and colleges within the state. In addition, she has
