COLUMBUS, Miss. ( WCBI) — Hundreds of high school students went to MUW Friday to learn more about getting involved in their community.

It was all part of Global Youth Services Day and was sponsored by the Columbus Public Library, that was awarded a grant to hold the program.

Students were able to visit booths set up by different local non-profits to learn more about volunteer opportunities.

One student, who is involved with the Mayor’s Youth Council, says getting involved helps you grow as a person,  just as much as it helps your community.

“It gives you something constructive to do. It gives you another outlook on life and a leadership position to show you different perspectives on life and show you that somebody is watching you and everything you do to help you better yourself and better others,” says Andy Stewart.

Global Youth Services Day is the largest service event in the world and this year’s honorary chair was First Lady Michelle Obama.
