TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — They are growing up a long way from their home.

And this summer ten Japanese children culminated a week of History Matters Summer camp by creating their own display at the Oren Dunn Museum in Tupelo.

They went around town making photographs and other pieces of art and put them in the display. The children’s parents are employees of either Toyota or the Toyota suppliers. Oren Dunn Curator Rae Mathis says the children were wonderful to work with.

“We were able to communicate,” she notes. “We relied somewhat on some of the older children to kind of help some of the younger children understand what they needed to do. But for the most part everybody enjoyed themselves. They had a wonderful time and their parents were really satisfied,” Mathis concludes.

Mathis says the Japanese parents really want their children to interact culturally with the Tupelo community.

And she says the Oren Dunn Museum is a great place where they can learn the history of the area, and the Japanese are making history here themselves.
