STARKVILLe, Miss. (WCBI) — Women can now enroll in all combat units in the military including the navy seals, army special forces and all other special units.

That historic decision came from the Pentagon last week.

It’s a decision two local women agree with.

“Little girls need to know that they can do more than home ec. stuff.”

Lynn Spruill joined the Navy decades ago as part of an experimental program for women aviators

“Still at a time when women were trying to find our way and what we could and couldn’t do,” she says.

Now Spruill would have more opportunities than ever as combat units are now open to women.

“It’s not a male or female role, it’s a capabilities role.” ” I’m glad to see that now all the roles are open and if you can do it, then you can do it,” she says.

and if she could start over, you better believe she’d be gunning for a spot.

“Absolutely would have, in fact if they would call me up, I’ll go now.”

Mother of 3 Krishina Turnipseed, who just became a Major, isn’t so sure she’d join a combat unit now, but says just having the opportunity is huge.

I was like wow, this is a historical moment for women in the military.”

She says opening more doors for women can only make the military stronger.

“You only know if you try, you know, allow us to do as much as I can, and I feel we will bring a different type of strength to the force.”

Strength that will continue to push women forward and keep the military making progress.
