COLUMBUS, Miss.(WCBI)–Med One, the Columbus Fire And Rescue emergency vehicle thats an SUV has been in operation for about a month now. And everyone in the city seems to be pleased with the new addition thats helping to save lives and is cheaper to operate.

Its been just about a month now since rolling out their latest life saving tool. Columbus Fire & Rescue’s Med One is getting rave reviews both from the department and from citizens of the Friendly City.

“A lot of time was being taken up with the medical runs. This will actually clear up a lot of times for essential training,” said Capt. Wes Mims/Columbus fire & Rescue.

When the men of station two get ready to take off, all of the necessary medical equipment thats in a big truck can also be found in Med One.

First responder Ryan Thompson who operates the SUV says Med One is faster and maneuvers better throughout street of the Friendly City.

“You know with a shorter response time. Taking the workload off the big trucks. Keeps some of the trucks from going out in the middle of the night. You know gives them a break,” said Ryan Thompson/Columbus Fire & Rescue.

“Maintenance costs were going up and fuel costs were up and this alleviates both of those problems,” said Wes Mims.

In the months of February and March Columbus Fire And Rescue personnel averaged 16 calls per day, Med One handled 5 of those calls. The department has plans on adding another SUV to the fleet of life saving vehicles.

“I think It’ll be a good choice for the city,” said Ryan Thompson.

“Theres one in East Columbus and one here in North Columbus,” said Wes Mims.

When you do the numbers, is equals to Med One taking over 33% of the call volume.
