MUW Develops App For Crisis Management and Information

COLUMBUS, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women rolled out a new app today to be used for crisis management.

The intent of the Schooldude CrisisManager app is to provide an electronic means for emergency guidelines to be used by university clients, according to Jim Jones, project director for campus planning.

Jones added, “The goal is to continue to provide information to enhance campus safety. This is an improvement that Dr. Jim Borsig (MUW president) championed to enhance our campus safety environment.”

The Schooldude CrisisManager app takes a school’s existing safety plan and converts it into an easy-to-use digital platform, viewable by any smartphone user from any location.

Anyone can download the app to their smart phones, and there is no charge to users. To download the app:

  1. Go to your smartphone’s App Store.
  2. Download “Schooldude CrisisManager” app to your smartphone.
  3. Open app and follow instructions to create an account.
  4. Once you have entered the app, click on the blue + at the top of the right of the page.
  5. Wait for the list of crisis plans, then click to open the client plans.
  6. Scroll to find Mississippi University for Women click the + to open it, then download the emergency guidelines.
  7. Open the guidelines.

The W is rolling out the new app a day before its annual full-scale emergency exercise set for Sept. 3 on campus.

The mock disaster drill will be in cooperation with local, state, federal and campus emergency responders, as well as some W nursing faculty and students, to test the readiness and capabilities of the emergency response agencies prior to an actual event.

Students will gain a better understanding of how community agencies cooperate in planning to mitigate the consequences of emergencies.

Dr. Tammie McCoy, chair of the bachelor of science in nursing program, said, “Our nursing students get an opportunity to see firsthand the events that could take place in a disaster. This experience will ultimately enhance the student’s ability to respond when a part of an actual disaster situation.”
