MSMS Wins Regional Science Bowl
COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Close to 100 high school students from 19 teams across the state descended on the MUW campus Friday for the Annual Regional Science Bowl.
Students competed in a quiz bowl style format for scholarships, trophies and the chance to move on to the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C. Outstanding individual performances were awarded scholarships. A $3,000 per year scholarship was given to the individual with the highest score, two $2,000 per year scholarships went to the students with the next two highest scores and one $1,500 per year scholarship was given to the participant with the next highest score.
MUW mathematics professor Dr. Dorothy Kerzel says, “The teams of high school students come in from across the state competing in a quiz bowl format. The ultimate prize at the end of the day is that the winning team gets an expense paid trip to Washington D.C. To compete in the national competition.”
The competition was hosted by MUW’s Department of Sciences and Mathematics.
Mississippi School for Math and Science Team #1 won the Regional Science Bowl competition. They will representthe region at the National Science Bowl, which will take place in Washington D.C. in April. Walnut High School Team #1 placed second.
