TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI)-The famous rap group Rae Sremmurd is from Tupelo, and this weekend they gave back to their city in a big way.

The rap group hosted the city’s first ever Sremm Fest.

On Saturday they performed a concert for the fans, and participated in a toy give away on Sunday.

Rae Srermmurd is among some of the hottest artist out right now.

After selling over 122 thousand copies on their debut album, one can easily say, Rae Sremmurd has struck gold.

“It’s just like , a dream come true, you see that and it’s like, dang, that’s what’s up cause that means that all the work that you was putting in the studio and all the grinding, all of the effort that you was putting in it wasn’t for nothing and wasn’t in vain,” rapper Slim Jxmmi said.

The duo is made up of two brothers, Slim Jxmmi and Swae Lee.

Although the brothers are stars now, their success didn’t come over night.

The odds weren’t always stacked in their favor. In fact, at one point in time, the duo was homeless.

“All of those days back on Ida, back in evergreen, president gate, all of those life events changed us as people and made us want to work harder. It made you realize like, yo, this ain’t what I want to do for the rest of my life,” rapper Swae Lee said.

And they were determined to do something about it.

From the rap battles in the high-school lunch room, to performing at local venues, the duo was destined to make it out and live out their dream.

The brothers got their big break when a big time Atlanta producer, Mike Will-Made-It, heard their demo.

“We went to Atlanta just hoping that we’ll link up with the right people and with the right moves, right decisions, and that’s what happened, bout two or three years ago we left, and that was the trip that sealed the deal for us,” Swae Lee said.

And the group hasn’t looked back since.

With dozens of fans screaming their names and reciting their lyrics during concerts, The brothers say they’re still in awe on how far they’ve come.

“It ain’t no way to really put it, it’s just like, it’s bigger than I ever dreamed, this is bigger than my dream so its bigger than life,” Slim Jxmmi said

The success for Rae Sremmurd is just beginning. But no matter how big they continue to get, or where they go, they’ll say they can never forget where they started.

“We always put Tupelo in everything we did, even when we went on BET as the “Outta State Boys” it still read, ‘Tupelo’ at the bottom of the screen, whether we was traveling in another city, another state, another country, we always tell them we from Tupelo, Mississippi,”
Both members of Rae Sremmurd received a key to the city of Tupelo on Saturday from Mayor Jason Shelton.
