STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — Instead of asking for pay raises for their workers, department heads in Starkville city government will have to earn them that.

That’s the basic message the Board of Aldermen’s three-person budget committee gave department heads during a meeting.

Aldermen said the administrators might cut every non-essential expenditure to make raises fit within a city budget that is strained more and more every year by increasing demands for services.

Committee member Roy Perkins cited everything from Christmas cards to cleaning supplies as expenses that add up over time.
