STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Practice makes perfect for a team full of dedicated girls who have qualified for nationals.

Team Flavor is the first Amateur Athletic Union basketball team in the Golden Triangle Area to earn the honor of qualifying for nationals.

The team will travel to Orlando to play at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in July.
What started off as something fun, turned into so much more.

“It was just going to be like a little I guess tournament from time to time but then it turned into a full AAU team and we started playing in tournaments and we started winning,” said Team Flavor Coach John Outlaw.

The girls hard work and commitment to excellence on the court keeps paying off.

Team Flavor won two qualifying tournaments and have only lost one game this year.
“It just means that the best players out there nationally, we can hang in there with them and compete,” said team member Acacia McBride.

They traveled  across the southeast almost every weekend during the spring in hopes of achieving their one dream, going to nationals.

“It means a lot because we don’t have teams like this is Starkville where we can go play and get exposed. And this is the first time I’ve ever done anything like this, so it’s going to be very exciting for me,” said team member Kirsten Thompson.

Team Flavor is excited to be one of the 200 plus teams competing at nationals.

The girls will work out at least twice a week until they depart for Orlando in July.
“Just go play hard and whatever happens happens but enjoy it while you’re there,” said Coach Outlaw.

The team is working hard to fund their trip to Orlando, asking for sponsors throughout the community.

“I’m just trying to fund raise and get what we can and bite the bullet on the rest,” added Outlaw.
