COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Heavy rain could be the reason a large tree fell on a historic building in downtown Columbus.

About 12:30 on Friday afternoon, the tree fell on what is known as the “slave quarters” behind the Temple Heights antebellum home.

The building had been on the property since 1837.

Owner Dixie Butler says she noticed the ground buckling around the tree but had no way of preventing the crash.

No one was injured. Butler was able to save some historic items from the house.

One to three inches of rain has fallen in the Columbus area in the last 48 hours.
