TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — The citizens of Tupelo will go to the polls on May 3 to vote whether to renew the Tupelo Major Thoroughfare Program.

The city council unanimously approved a motion to send the referendum to the voters Tuesday night. Mayor Jason Shelton says the five year renewable program has been a great success since it was started in 1991. One of the projects from the current program is the renovation of East Main street near downtown.

Shelton says the new projects will cost about 20-million dollars, and will be used to upgrade major thoroughfares in the city including Gloster and Jackson Streets.

“And then for the first time in the history of the program will include a specific maintenance budget which is something we’ve learned from the state’s 1987 highway program that if you build great roads you’re doing yourself a disservice if you don’t also maintain those roads so we’re trying to be proactive in maintaining the streets of Tupelo,” the mayor explains.

And Shelton says the East Main project is 63-percent complete. It should be completed in June.
