TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — An afternoon fire at a title loan company meant traffic delays near Tupelo’s Barnes Crossing Business District.

It was about 1:40 p.m. when firemen were called to the Cash 2 Go Title Loan company at North Gloster and Barnes Crossing Road.

All four employees in the building were able to escape, but the building was gutted by heavy fire and smoke.

It took firefighters about an hour and a half to extinguish the flames. The building’s owner, Howard Davenport, says the structure was an area landmark.

“My father-in-law, D.L. Collums built it in 1950,” Davenport said. “It was a truck stop up until the highway changed and the new highway came in and it fell from use.”

Davenport had just left the building where his office is located. He says preliminary reports point to an electrical cause for the blaze.
