Video: A Monroe County Deputy Is Shot

ABERDEEN, Miss.(WCBI)–Tonight a Monroe County deputyn is recovering after being shot while on the job early this morning. It happened around three this morning on Highway 45 Alternate.

From what Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell is telling us there was indeed probable cause for pulling over a speeding motorcyclist that did not have a tag on his vehicle. At a Highway 45 Alternate location in Monroe County is where Deputy Sloan attempted to stop the suspect, there was a brief car chase.

“When he got out of his car he went up to the motorcycle at that time the person on the motorcycle pulled his gun and started shooting at officer Sloan. Officer Sloan was hit in the chest area,” said Sheriff Cecil Cantrell/Monroe County.

The confrontation between the suspect and Sloan took place three miles south of the Okolona exit in the south bound lane.

“Its right here at home now. So we are glad that our officer is in good condition and going to make a full recovery. And thats the good part of this whole thing,” said Sheriff Cecil Cantrell.

Using his weapon Deputy Sloan did return fire, its not certain whether or not the suspect was hit.

“Well I’ve been telling my men make sure you wear your vest. And make sure if you stop anybody today or whenever, make sure you are extremely cautious,” said Sheriff Cecil Cantrell.

Sheriff Cantrell has vowed not to stop until the suspect is caught.
Investigators need you help in finding a suspect described as a Black male that was riding a motorcycle with a wide tire in back. The suspect was wearing a black helmet with red stripes and had on a black coat.
