Video: A New Grocery Store Opens In Smithville
SMITHVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)-Nearly three years later the town of Smithville continues to rebuild new business such as city hall and a police department after the April 2011 tornado.
Among those new facilities is a grocery store.
That’s the sound of recovery in Smithville. Customers lined up, as Postell’s Meat Market opened its doors.
“I pulled up there were about five cars out there at six o’clock waiting on me and they set out there until we opened and we unlocked the door they started coming in,” says Donnie Postell.
Donnie Postell, of Hamilton Alabama, decided Smithville would be home to his second grocery store.
After being confronted by city leaders, Postell said it was time for him to take a leap of faith.
“The council asked me to come over and I came over to talk with them and we prayed about it and the Lord made the way and so here we are,” says Postell.
Postell’s Meat Market offers basic items for Smithville residents such as produce, chips, and of course…meat.
“We sell all USD choice beef, freshest pork around, fresh chicken…Marshall Darbin chicken,” says Postell.
Since the April 2011 tornados swept many of their businesses, including theie grocery store, residents have traveled to Amory for basic needs.
“It’s been something we’ve been needing ever since the tornado. It looks good and I think it will do a lot for a lot of people around here,” says Loraza Freeman.
Mayor Greg Kennedy believes it’s one more small step to reviving their tattered town.
“We learn through disaster recovery that little things make big differences and in our case a grocery store a meat market makes big differences in how your community comes back and grows,” says Mayor Greg Kennedy.
Postell hopes his store offers more than just convenience.
“Really looking forward to this day and be able to serve the people of Smithville and give them back what they lost,” says Postell.
A Piggly Wiggly was destroyed in the April 27th Tornado.
