STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – It’s all about adoptions this weekend at the Oktibbeha County Humane Society.
For the first time, the shelter is hosting an “Empty The Shelter” event, where all pets can be adopted for a very low price.

9-year-old Abby Lee is getting her birthday wish fulfilled: a new furry friend. She found the perfect match, a 2-year-old Golden Retriever named Lucky at the Oktibbeha County Humane Society. He’s a gift from her grandmother.

“Because he’s Lucky because he’s going to be adopted,” said Abby Lee.

The two were the first to adopt a pet from this special sale at the Oktibbeha County Shelter to help relive overpopulation.

For 2 days only, all adoptions are only $19.99, which includes the vaccinations, a micro chip and spay or neuter.

Organizers say it’s important to give each animal a safe and loving home.

“Their forever home is hopefully filled with a family, an individual, someone who is looking to take care of these animals like they would their child. It’s nice for the animals to get their best friend but also for humans to have their best friend, which could be these cats and dogs,” said Camille Cotton, with the Oktibbeha County Humane Society.

The shelter has around 160 animals but their maximum capacity tops out at 120.

“If you spay and neuter your animals, it will help us out tremendously,” added Cotton.

Lucky was the first to be adopted Friday and his new owners hope to set a steady pace for others adoptions this weekend.

“I worked at the vet school here at Mississippi State and I just believe in taking care of animals and dogs and cats. I love animals,” said Robinson.

“I’m excited more than this dog,” said Lee.

“We are going to take it home and we are going to play with it and we are going to love it and we are going to take real good care of it,” added Robinson.
