Video: Athletic Evangelists Bring Physical And Spiritual Strength To Area

TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) –  Students throughout Northeast Mississippi are learning from world-class athletes about the importance of making positive decisions.

As WCBI’s Allie Martin reports,  the athletes are part of a group known as “The Power Team” and they kicked off a five-day crusade at a Tupelo church combining physical and spiritual strength.

It’s not your typical Wednesday night worship service.

West Jackson Street Baptist Church is hosting The Power Team, which is made up of world-class athletes, who are known for shredding phone books, reducing piles of bricks to rubble , and smashing through blocks of ice.

For more than 30 years these evangelists have traveled the world, sharing life changing messages in churches and schools.

“We say we’re using the skills God gave us to run through these two by fours and break bricks, and then we share the Gospel, the hurting world needs to hear that there’s mercy in Christ.  The other side of it is, we go into the schools,  and our school assemblies aren’t Christian based, they’re making good choices, anti bullying, say no to drugs,” said Todd Keane,  president of The Power Team.  The former Indianapolis Colts player joined the group of athletic evangelists shortly after his football career ended.  He says it is an honor to inspire, encourage and motivate people, whether in a public school, or church.

“If you’re not called to do this, you would never make it, football drained my body, the paycheck paid me for a little while, the fame of a national championship, but nothing ever drained me like the Power Team does, physically, emotionally, the bricks tear our bodies up, we’ve had broken bones, but when those people walk up to you and say man you changed my life, because of what you said today, I want to live a new life, make a difference,” Keane said.

The Power Team will put muscle in the Gospel each night through Sunday at West Jackson Street Baptist Church.
