STARKVILLE, Miss.(WCBI)–Parents of young children are camped out at Emerson Family Center in Starkville, taking advantage of lessons being taught on ways of disciplining their children.

When it comes to teaching a child what type of behavior is acceptable and whats not acceptable, it could result in attending parenting classes like the one being taught at the center over the summer months.

“We don’t come here knowing just how to be a good parent. Burt we can do some things and take some classes so that we can learn how to be even betterBarbara Culberson/Program Manager.

The parents are learning that children should not be left to themselves. In the short time allotted, Culberson is driving home the three styles of parenting. One style is that of the dictatorial parent.

“You know, because I said so. And the other one is the door mat. Whatever you want to do. Well somewhere in between there is an active parent. And those are the kind of parents that can help produce positive kids that will thrive and survive in the kind of society that they are growing up in,’ said Barbara Culberson.

Parents allowing themselves to be doormats must prepare for future consequences, when someone in the public other than a parent in the home is stepped on.

“We are a society of rules and so as a parent we are the first teachers of the children. And as the first teachers, we have to input some things into them as it relates to how I control myself and how I conduct myself in society.”

And so good discipline is required, resulting in health behavior patterns, and may involve the use of both punishment and or rewards.

The program manager stopped short of suggesting, and did not weigh in on whether or not to use physical punishment, which has recently met with some opposition.
