OKTIBBEHA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)–While many of James Harrell’s friends and family mourn, some of them are finding comfort by remembering an outstanding young man.

West Point is a close-knit community where family and friends celebrate the good times and grieve with each other during the bad.

As the Harrell family mourns the loss of their son, James, friends say they will be with them every step of the way.

“It’s a community we will rally around the family and give a great deal of support and prayer for the family,” says Tim Fowler.

Tim Fowler not only knows the Harrell family from years ago, but he was also James’ principal at West Point High School.

“James was just one of those kids you liked to have around because he was a great student…great person very respectful,” says Fowler.

“James was a good hearted person. Great Christian person always helping his family he was a real big help to his family when his dad was stationed overseas,” says Cody Miller.

As Cody Miller looks back on the many hiking trips together, he remembers how technical James was when it came to his hiking equipment.

“James was real big on his equipment. See we had really expensive rock climbing equipment and we were over at Sipsey Wilderness and a buddy of mine decided to climb up a tree. He said, “Throw me your rope so I can get down.” Like I said it was 34 feet up and James said, “That’s not what it is for man.” He said, “Well throw me the rope.” James said “That’s not what it is for.” He was sitting there arguing I swear 30 minutes up in the tree,” says Miller.

Cody may have to say good-bye to his friend too soon, but he will never forget their friendship.

“James will always be in my heart. I think this spring me and a bunch of friends that know him the best are going to take a hiking trip somewhere,” says Miller.

Funeral arrangements for James Harrell have not been set.
