There’s nothing quite like seasonal fruits and vegetables. But if you aren’t an avid gardener, you can still enjoy delicious produce.
Georgia peaches. Alabama tomatoes. Mississippi melons.

Homegrown fruits and vegetables are the perks of the summer season. Paul’s Produce, located on the corner of Garner and Tuscaloosa Road in Columbus offers farmer market style produce, Monday through Saturday.

What are some of your most popular items? “Tomatoes, canteloupe, and watermelon,” say Katie Rast.

Katie Rast may be an upcoming high school sophomore, but she and friend Darian Beasley are staying busy with their summer jobs. Paul’s Produce, owned by Katie’s father Paul, has even expanded to include an indoor space to keep up with the demand.

Like most old fashioned produce operations, the road side stand that includes a trailer full of watermelons draws the largest crowd. So, that’s where we set up shop.

Plucking is a way to check the ripeness of a melon. The more hollow the sound, the better. Turns out, everyone uses different methods.
For the teens at Paul’s Produce, selling the summer’s ripest bounty is just one more day in the life.
